Motor vehicle crashes result in some 1.2 million deaths and many more injuries worldwide each year (WHO, 2004). Motor vehicle crashes represent the leading cause of death and injury for people under thirty-five years of age in the United States. In 2006, 42,642 people were killed and 2.7 million were injured in automobile collisions in North America (Centers for Disease Control, 2008; National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2005). In alcohol related crashes, 16,885 people died in the United States (NHTSA, 2006).
